Declared in 2009 by the United Nations, Mandela Day is marked every year on 18 July - Nelson Mandela's birthday. As the world reflects on Madiba’s legacy, we give thanks for his life, his leadership and his devotion to humanity and to humanitarian causes.
On his 90th birthday in 2009, in London’s Hyde Park, Madiba said: “It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is your hands now.” This started a worldwide movement for social change.
Eleven years on, Mandela Day has enjoyed global support and solidarity as an opportunity to uplift the dignity of others. It has moved away from an ad hoc, individualized, reactive approach and moved towards a sustainable, long-term, collaborative methodology to address issues affecting our society.
Mandela Day is a global call-to-action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world - the ability to make an impact.
One minute is given for every year of Mandela's public service. He first started to campaign for the human rights of every South African in 1942.
