Music therapy is often used in memory care treatment to slow the decline of speech skills.
In some instances, music therapy can inspire individuals who are nonverbal to communicate by singing or humming.
Practicing an instrument can have the following benefits:
- Increase brain plasticity, or the brain's ability to adapt to new connections, in both the long and short term.
- Enhances memory
- Socialization
- Reduction of stress and anxiety
- Music therapy may also improve cognitive ability in older adults
We are planning to start with Music Therapy on weekly basis in our active ageing programme and need percussion instruments like Tambourines, Marakas, Triangles, Bells to make noise, more, even wooden spoons to use for playing drums on plastic buckets or proper Jembe drums.
We have 10 Older Residents in Symphony that will benefit on weekly basis and we can also do smaller groups with our younger Residents.
For movement therapy in the Active ageing group we are in need of bean bags, Hula-hoops, paddles, plastic balls, and rings for activities.
For Art therapy we would like to have art supplies: small paint brushes and water based paints, paper, glue sticks, craft glue, colourful paper for paper-mache work, colouring books and colouring pens, crayons and wrapping paper.
Please contact us if you are able to assist us in this initiative.
